John Lennon recorded his “Walls and Bridges” album during his so-called “lost weekend,” the time he was apart from Yoko Ono.
Issued by the Apple label in the US in late September 1974, it reached UK stores 52 years ago today (4th October 1974). The album reached No.1 in the US with “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” marking Lennon’s first solo single to top the US charts.
Other notable tracks include “#9 Dream,” “Nobody Love You (When You’re Down and Out),” “Scared,” and “Mind Games”-era companion pieces such as “Old Dirt Road.”
Elton John who guested on piano and vocals on “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night.” made a bet with Lennon that the song would be a No.1. It topped the charts in November 1974, so on Thanksgiving night John walked onto the Madison Square Garden stage with Elton.
They played three songs together, including “I Saw Her Standing There.”
