In 1945, the Battle of Okinawa,
Japan (also known as Operation Iceberg) commenced, continuing until 22nd
June. Being the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War during World War
II, it was an Allied victory with U.S.
forces occupying Okinawa until 1972.
