Today's the Day - 11th August
- 145 years ago: Legendary English cricketer
Tom Richardson was born in Byfleet, Surrey
on this day. He was a fast bowler with a long run up and a high arm
allowing him to gain excessive lift from the pitch. In the 1963 edition of
the Wisden Cricketers Almanack (the cricket bible), he was selected as
“One of the Six Giants of the Wisden Century” along with the likes of Sir
Donald Bradman, WG Grace and Jack Hobbs – very good company indeed!
- 65 years ago: On this day, Steve Wozniak,
the co-founder of Apple computers, along with Steve Jobs was born. Wozniak
currently lives in California although he
has recently applied for Australian citizenship, saying he would very much
like to live in Melbourne.
- 50 years ago: A years to the day after the
release of the Beatles “A Hard Days
Night” movie in New York,
the follow up “Help” was
released. It is believed that the group were not particularly happy with
the filming of the movie, or indeed the end product. John Lennon was
quoted as saying, "The movie was out of our control. With A Hard
Day's Night, we had a lot of input, and it was semi-realistic. But
with Help! Dick Lester (the Director) didn't tell us what it was
all about.”
