1st May

The world’s first adhesive stamp, Britain’s Penny Black was first issued on this day in 1840. First used 6 days later, it famously portrayed a profile of Queen Victoria on a black background.

The idea of an adhesive stamp to indicate pre-payment of postage was part of Sir Rowland Hill’s proposals, put through 3 years earlier, to reform the British postal system. Up to then paying upon delivery was the norm.

Nowadays a Penny Black stamp is not particularly rare as there were so many issued. However a mint condition specimen could fetch anything up to £4000

May 1st birthdays include
