Thoughts on Sport and Tatty's Tips - Sunday 10th December 2011

Yesterday was somewhat confusing. With only 1 winner at both of my favoured courses (Southwell and Wolverhampton) and each of those going off at odds of 6/4, I was beginning to despair, especially with 7 unplaced runners on the bounce. This was until the last 2 races when we landed 2nd place in both at 11/1 and 16/1, which restored my faith a little, shall we say?

One of the winners, namely Guava in the 7.50 at Wolverhampton, gave its trainer Richard Hannon a record 217 winners in a calendar year. Click here to read the Racing Post's take on the achievement.

Still at least United managed to gain an excellent 2-1 away win at Oxhey Jets.

It is fairly unusual to have AW racing on a Sunday, but the 3rd day of the Southwell meeting takes place. Here are a few that may be of interest.

On to a different subject namely the noble art, or more specifically the controversial (if not outrageous) Amir Khan v Lamont Peterson WBA/IBF World light-welterweight title bout, at Washington Convention Center last night.

Khan lost his title in an action packed contest after being controversially deducted 2 points by the referee for 2 incidents of pushing in rounds 7 and 12. The three judges scored the fight 113-112, 113-112, 110-115. But how can 1 judge believe the British fighter won by 5 rounds, whereas the others shaded it to Peterson. I personally gave the fight to Khan by 2 rounds which, with the referees (interesting, let's say) deductions, would have made it a draw on my card.

"It was like fighting two people in the ring, the referee and Lamont," Khan said afterwards. "I can see why there hasn't been a big fight in Washington in the last 20 years, because of decisions like this."

So where does Khan go after this? Maybe a rise in the weights is on the cards or will he want a rematch with Peterson to try and put the record straight? All that can be said is that King Khan cannot claim his crown anymore, or at least not at the moment.

Joe Frazier RIP

Further to my post on Sunday, the sad news has come through this morning that former world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier has died from liver cancer.

Britain Misses Our 'Enry!

Legendary British heavyweight boxer, Henry Cooper passed away in 2011 at his son's home in Oxted in Surrey. It is thought that he never quite recovered from losing his beloved wife in 2008 and his identical twin George 2 years later.

Sir Henry will go down in history as the man who floored a young Cassius Clay in 1963. The story continues with the dubious methods used by trainer Angelo Dundee to ensure the brash, young American would come back to win.

He held the British heavyweight title for 12 years along with periods as Empire, Commonwealth and European title holder - not bad for someone who, in this day and age, would box as a cruiserweight

Hayemaker or Haye Taker?

Last night in Hamburg, a fight to help unify factions of the World Heavyweight Title was contested by Ukrainian, Wladimir Klitschko and Briton, David Haye. Klitschko put up his WBO and IBF titles, whilst Haye laid his WBA belt on the line.

 After a rather distasteful run up to the fight, with Haye being continually abusive toward his opponent and where Klitschko dealt with all insults in a gentlemanly manner, the Ukrainian won easily by a unanimous points decision. 

After the fight Haye claimed to have gone into the contest with a broken toe after an accident that happened 3 weeks ago in training.

If this was the case:

1. Why was his injury not picked up by the overseeing medical professionals, causing the fight to be postponed until a later date? 

2. As Haye claimed not to be fully fit at the start, surely all fight fans that travelled to Germany, were coaxed there on a false pretence and have a case to get their travel costs refunded? 

3. All fans who bet on the outcome, or more to the point, on Haye to win (and Tatty includes himself in this), should get their stakes refunded? 

4.  All those paying for the Sky TV pay per view coverage should also get refunds?

To be honest Mr Haye, we  have been conned by the fact that you (so you say), did not go into the fight at 100% fitness. I am sure that you will be only too quick to take your purse for the fight though, not giving a damn about your fans being out of pocket. 

With the apathy you have shown towards the title that you once held, you have as much as stuck two fingers up at the authorities that control the sport and anyone connected with it. 

Let’s hope this is the last we see of you in the ring, because if you return, how will anyone ever take you seriously and be sure that everything is above board? 

There are a lot of very angry people, who feel totally sold out by this whole sordid affair, but I doubt you really care, so long as your bank balance rises. Thankfully the right man won the bout.
