In 1895, Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde’s libel trial
against the Marquess of Queensbury opened in London .

Upon leaving the court, a summons was issued for Wilde’s
arrest, since homosexuality was illegal. He was convicted and served two years
in prison from May 1895 to May 1897.
